Amor y oscuridad son dos de las fuerzas que interaccionan en este libro, una autobiografía en forma de novela. Amos Oz (1939) nació en Jerusalén y se licenció en filosofía y literatura en la Hebrew University de su ciudad natal. Durante 25 años vivió en el kibbutz Hulda, donde era profesor de instituto. No fue hasta 1986 que se trasladó a Arad, ciudad situada en el desierto del Néguev. Desde 1987 es profesor de literatura hebrea en la Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, en Beersheba, universidad de la cual se convirtió en catedrático de literatura hebrea moderna en 1993. Por otro lado, ha sido profesor y escritor invitado por varias universidades en Estados Unidos, Inglaterra y Alemania, y desde 1991 es miembro de la Academia de la Lengua Hebrea. Ha publicado un gran número de novelas, entre las que destacan: Mi querido Mijael (1968), Tocar el agua, tocar el viento (1973), Un descanso verdadero (1982), La caja negra (1987), La tercera condición (1991), No digas noche (1994), El mismo mar (1998) y Una historia de amor y oscuridad (2002), su novela más autobiográfica. Su talento literario lo ha hecho merecedor de numerosos premios internacionales, como el Goethe (2005), el reputado Premio Israelí de Literatura (1998) o el Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras (2007). Además de la novela, Amos Oz ha cultivado la escritura periodística y ensayística. Desde 1967 ha publicado numerosos artículos sobre el conflicto árabe-israelí, promulgando su compromiso basado en el reconocimiento mutuo y la coexistencia entre Israel y Palestina en Gaza y Cisjordania. Entre los ensayos más conocidos, cabe destacar Under This Blazing Light (1978), In the Land of Israel (1983), The Slopes of Lebanon (1987), Israel, Palestine, and Peace (1994), All Our Hopes (1998) y But These are Two Different Wars (2002). Es uno de los líderes del movimiento Peace Now, y por ello le han sido otorgadas prestigiosas condecoraciones: Premio de la paz de los libreros (1992, Alemania), Caballero de la Cruz de la Legión de Honor (1997, Francia), Premio Libertad de Expresión (2002, Noruega) y Medalla Internacional de la Tolerancia (2002, Polonia).
